Country awaits disastrous situation

DHAKA, Sept 15: Engr Mohammad Fazlul Azim MP, the lone Independent candidate in parliament, called upon two major political parties to resolve the deadlock over the next general elections through dialogues. Otherwise, he said the country`s overall situation will take a serious turn.

He made the remark taking the floor in parliament on a point of order after Tofail Ahmed MP and Suranjit Sengupta MP of Awami League spoke in the Jatiya Sangsad.

Fazlul Azim said, “What is now necessary in the country? What thing do people want? A crisis has created. If any election is unilaterally, the entire nation will suffer for it. It will be very disastrous. Violence will appear allover the country.”

Addressing Suranjit Sengupta, he said, “You`re playing broken record saying that they (BNP) should come to parliament to talk about their proposal. You`re also saying that election should be held in accordance with the constitution. But, this is not your responsibility. Those of us who are in politics should take decisions together. Take a decision on the basis of consensus. Otherwise, a disastrous situation will emerge soon.”

Fazlul Azim said, “Today (Sunday) is the International Democracy Day. This day is very important in the context of Bangladesh. Despite the country achieved its independence 42 years ago, we`re yet to make parliament effective. Opposition doesn`t come to parliament. It has become a political culture in Bangladesh. Politics has become confrontational. We can`t tolerate the opposition.”

He also called for the resolving the political impasses over the next general elections. “Democracy cannot be established through brute majority in parliament. Democracy does not teach division. Country`s people are now 160 million, not only 300. You can`t hold any election unilaterally. If you try to hold any such election it will be a mockery,” he said.
